The 1964 Brazilian coup d’état marked the beginning of a twenty-one year repressive, authoritarian regime. President João Goulart was ousted and within days, the new military government had consolidated power. The United States was the first nation to officially recognize the interim government. With American support, the military censored the media, ensured their complete control through several congressional acts, and began systematically eliminating any opposition to their authority.
